Have you recently started to understand yourself in a new way—maybe through a neuropsychological evaluation, a late diagnosis, or content you’ve encountered online during college? Are you finding that the strategies that seem to work for others don’t quite fit your brain? I specialize in working with college students and young adults who discover later that they are neurodivergent. Together, we explore what this identity means for you in the context of academics, relationships, independence, and future goals. My approach supports you in building systems that actually work for your brain, while creating a life that feels authentic, sustainable, and aligned with your values.
In our sessions, I create a safe, judgment-free space where we explore the reasons behind your feelings, work on breaking unhelpful habits, and try out new ways of thinking, like seeing situations from a different perspective and making choices based on your values. I use different types of therapy along with holistic approaches, to fit what works best for you. I also believe in using creative activities to help heal your inner child and express emotions in a healthy way. You are the expert on your own life—my role is to support you and ask important questions that help you grow. The goal is for you to live in a way that feels true to who you are, bringing together all parts of yourself so you can feel whole.
“It is important for us to know ourselves and be able to address our own issues head on. It can be easy to shy away from looking at our problems in a realistic light and to take the steps needed to change for the better. With compassion and understanding, I work with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing. My office is a safe and supportive environment in which to help you look at your whole self and get comfortable with making lasting changes. Some of the most common things I address in therapy are anxiety, feeling lost or stuck in your life, improving communication, couples in conflict, sexual relationship therapy, depression, preparing for a new baby, feeling unappreciated in your relationship, improving self-esteem, reconnecting with your partner, reducing stress and overwhelming emotions. Understanding emotions and sharing them effectively truly is a skill. Some are born with it, others learn it, but we can always improve. I work with you to help you deepen your understanding around your struggles. I am here as your guide. Let me help you on your journey!” Bridget is a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist specializing in individual, couple, and family therapy. How you feel about yourself, relate with others, and make your way in the world is significantly influenced by your earliest relationships. If your caregivers struggled with their own psychological health, their ability to connect with and be emotionally available to you may have been impaired. You may have felt invalidated, rejected, smothered or unwanted. Since you had no choice but to adapt and attach to the adults available to you, you may now find yourself in relationships that feel empty, end abruptly, or are riddled with conflict. Such disharmony only exacerbates feeling depressed and anxious. As a psychodynamic therapist, I am trained to recognize the underlying thoughts, feelings, and patterns that keep you from sustaining meaningful relationships and stuck in emotional pain. Rather than viewing you as a diagnosis or problem to be solved, I'm most interested in understanding and helping you work through what is troubling you. I completed training at The Object Relations Institute of New York City, The Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago, and I am an Assistant Professor at Indiana University South Bend . I am also a classically trained musician and former high school choral director. Please visit my website at www.kurtmhanus.com
