I have been in private practice in the Boston/Cambridge area for 30 years working with adults and adolescents, couples and families. I work with clients utilizing a trauma informed lens as well as elements of liberation psychology and relational cultural theory. I feel all clinical work must begin with a thorough understanding of a client's multiple identities and how those identities interact within their communities and the larger culture. My work and my passion are embedded in a deep committment to social justice. I specialize in multicultural treatment, identity development, trauma, depression, anxiety, work issues, life transitions, parenting issues, adoption, fertility issues, gender issues and sexuality. I serve as the Director of the Brandeis Counseling Center at Brandeis University and in that role help students and faculty navigate academia. I see clients in my office at 1105 Mass Ave in Cambridge which is a 5-10 min walk from the Harvard T stop. I also offer off street parking on Remington Street across from 1105 Mass Ave. My hours are 6am-8am Mon-Fri, Thurs 5pm-10pm and Sat 7am-3pm.

I believe the role of a therapist is to be more than a reflective and empathetic companion in the client’s journey and must also incorporate directive approaches in order to alternate between being a companion and being a leader on that journey. Inherent in this belief is that clients are coming to therapy because they want something different than what they currently have. This can be as simple as a new perspective on a past or current struggle or as complex as a new skill set for managing and overcoming emotional, behavioral, cognitive, relational, or somatic patterns that have arisen in response to emotional distress. My theoretical orientation is rooted in Systems Theory and I utilize interventions from Family Systems Therapy, Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, ARC, as well as Somatic and Mindfulness based psychotherapies. I have over 15 years of clinical experience working with adolescents, college students, adults, couples, and families. My experience has shown that change is typically hard work and often requires compassionate and collaborative support in order to build new skills. I see clients in both Oregon and Massachusetts and I offer a 30 minute free video or phone consultation to see if I am the right fit for you.

I’m so glad you're here! If masking, people-pleasing, code-switching, avoiding, isolating (and everything in between) has been your way of managing your anxiety, here is a space where we create a calm place for you to be your authentic self. Come with quirks, emotions, humor, cursing, and even your crafts, this is your space. All that in stride, I understand that the path to finding your true self can be complex and sometimes daunting. But rest assured, you don’t have to do it alone. Here, therapy is not just about addressing issues; it's about celebrating who you are and who you’re becoming. So bring every part of you into the room. I’m here to listen, understand, and help you thrive.

I understand that the process of seeking and coming to therapy is not an easy one and that the vulnerability of therapy can be intimidating. It can be difficult to step into vulnerability in a world that equates vulnerability with weakness. However, I hope to redefine strength, as most healing comes from raw, unfiltered moments of self-reflection and honesty, and it is through seeking out the help to heal that courage is displayed. Imagine a life where struggles become steppingstones and every hurdle leads to personal growth. At one point, we all seek out a compass to help navigate through the journey of life. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I find it important to identify the source of your difficulties and then use evidence-based treatments to reduce distress and help you live a more fulfilling life. My approach to treatment is most consistent with the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT); although I integrate different techniques to fit each client’s needs. I am committed to helping adults learn how to better understand themselves and their relationships with others. Whether your struggles have been present for a long time or are new, I value understanding your perspective and unique emotional experience so that we can create a trusting therapeutic relationship. I value honesty, integrity, and transparency to promote trust building within the therapeutic relationship to help bring about personal growth. To promote success, we must be a good fit for each other. I have experience working with a wide range of individuals with different concerns, including depression/mood disorders, anxiety, anger, sleep problems, substance use, interpersonal communication, relationships, and more. I also recognize that not all psychological pain can be considered “disordered” and may sometimes be a side effect of the human condition. So, whatever brings you to therapy I am happy to work collaboratively with you to make a treatment plan based on evidence-based treatments to give you the best opportunity for therapeutic success. I will then work with you to tailor a treatment plan that is unique to your background, experiences, and goals. Whatever challenges you face, I am here to be an unbiased outlet to support and guide you toward a more meaningful life. If making the call is difficult, I encourage you to contact me through other methods, such as email or message, if you have questions or want to schedule a time to meet.

I am a strengths-based therapist with an active, collaborative style, and a solution focus. I worked in college mental health centers for years before opening a private practice, and I enjoy working with adolescents, emerging adults, and young adults on the wide variety of issues that they present with. I am also a certified addictions counselor (CADC-II) and I often work with young people who are either questioning their alcohol and drug use, or who are trying to abstain from substances or other addictive behaviors. I have been practicing psychotherapy since 2003, and more recently earned my doctoral degree in counseling and sport psychology at Boston University, so I also commonly work with student-athletes and high-achieving clients.

Hi! My name is Julia, and I’m excited to meet you! First, let me introduce myself and share what working with me will be like.   My practice focuses on balancing acceptance and change—embracing who you are and your life-circumstances, while also encouraging progress and self-transformation. My method combines evidence-based modalities (Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Practices) with Liberation Health Theory, a holistic approach that will help you unlearn harmful societal messages that are deeply ingrained in all of us. I’m committed to helping you build internal self-worth and trust. You will be able to tap back into your intuition, and move forward with confidence. I often use humor in our sessions to help make things feel a bit more relaxed. It’s all about finding a balance—supporting you through challenges while keeping things approachable. Nobody wants to feel like they’re talking to a wall! I show up authentically in sessions, hoping that you can too. I specialize in helping clients navigate: * Life changes * Depression * Anxiety * Body image concerns / self-esteem * Relationship struggles * Trauma * Family relationships / boundaries * Navigating neurodivergence (ADHD, ASD, etc.) We all deserve to face life’s unique challenges from a regulated starting point. I know that this is not always easy in 2024, and I will be committed to your improvement, whatever that looks like for you. I meet you where you are at. Through my own lived experience, I can deeply resonate with the realities my Millennial and Gen Z clients face. Dating, social media, politics, finances, and demands from school or work can be so daunting. My main priority as a therapist is to create a non-judgmental, engaging, and approachable environment where you feel empowered to navigate these challenges together. Just having one of those days where you need to vent about your mom, partner, or roommate? There’s plenty of space for that too. While I pull from many approaches in my work, I especially enjoy utilizing skills-based therapies like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). These can address concerns like anxiety, stress, interpersonal conflict, sleep, and more. My goal is that you leave each and every session feeling more ready to take on what life is throwing your way. If you’re looking to gain control amidst our out-of-control world, I’d love to connect with you. Please don’t hesitate in reaching out for a free 15-minute consultation.

Central to the therapy process is connecting with someone with whom you can openly explore your past and present; thoughts, feelings, and wishes. As a therapist I am committed to helping you understand the important experiences and patterns that have influenced your life and begin to find openings for new insights and greater meaning. This can allow for personal growth, more fulfilling relationships, and improved coping with difficulties. My style is collaborative, supportive and interactive. My approach involves both facilitating personal exploration and helping you find new strategies for managing difficulty. People who come to see me are often struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, eating/body image concerns, or struggling with transitions in young adulthood

I am accepting new clients! I believe in the power of therapy to help people connect with inner wisdom, explore and build upon strengths, and process difficulties in a supportive and non-judgmental space. I view the therapeutic relationship as being fundamental to growth and change, as it lays the groundwork for you to work through vulnerable feelings and explore relational patterns. I try to foster this relationship by connecting on a human level and providing an atmosphere of care, acceptance, openness, curiosity, and humility. While I tend not to give advice, I may share new perspectives, offer tools for change, or help you draw connections between current patterns and past experiences. I deeply respect your decision to seek therapy and look forward to getting to know you.
