I specialize in brain-based therapies, such as Brainspotting; these specific modalities of treatment focus on the neurobiological variables (neuro networks) of each person to create change, specifically - neuro experiential change. Because understanding the why of behavior is not enough, for new behavior to be created new neural pathways need to be formed. I'm a bilingual in Spanish clinician with 20+ years of experience working in mental health with extensive training and credentials. However, I believe that you are the expert in your own inner world, and I am here to be a safe, grounding, and validating companion. “Nothing could ever be broken that we can't fix together" - Mirabel from Encanto

I am a patient, compassionate, non-judgmental helping professional who understands struggle and uncertainty. I believe that people are generally doing their best, and that growth and change can be difficult, uncomfortable, and scary. I think that having someone help you navigate through times of uncertainty, sit with you in your struggles, and challenge your beliefs and behaviors can be instrumental in understanding how and why your behavior patterns are contributing to your distress and preventing you from moving forward. I approach counseling from an interpersonal attachment-based perspective, in that I believe relational issues are the driving force behind our emotions, motivations, and behaviors. I specialize in working with clients who struggle with substance use and abuse, specifically individuals who work in the service and hospitality industries. I also have experience counseling clients with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, borderline personality disorder, and relationship difficulties. I received my Masters in Counseling from Loyola University New Orleans and I am a provisionally licensed professional counselor. I find inspiration personally and professionally in the works of Brené Brown, Irvin Yalom, Gabor Maté, and Thich Nhat Han. I counsel individuals, groups, and couples. I respect everyone's individuality and do not discriminate against anyone.

My clinical training experiences have largely centered around assessing the intersections of medical/health, psychological, and social aspects of individuals to facilitate successful outcomes in medical settings. With training from some of the leading experts in psychological assessment, I am also proficient in conducting disability/worker's compensation evaluations, pre-employment screening, and general psychodiagnostic evaluations in addition to pre-surgical assessments. I am licensed in the state of Texas (#38086) and hold a PsyPact license to practice in other states. My research focuses on understanding how psychological factors contribute to medical outcomes. I have over 60 peer-reviewed publications, primarily focused on pre-surgical psychological evaluations and their predictive value for various outcomes. I use my research findings to assist patients in managing risk factors before and after surgery to optimize their outcomes. Additionally, I have a keen interest in psychological assessment, particularly in the use and study of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in both research and practice. I have been recognized by several national organizations with early-career research awards for my contributions to pre-surgical psychological evaluations. Currently, I am the Principal Investigator on novel psychological interventions for Type 2 Diabetes. I also serve as an Associate Editor for two esteemed journals in the field – Psychological Assessment and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.
Perhaps one of the hardest decisions in life is to seek help. You are used to handling everything yourself, but you don’t have to do this alone. We all encounter challenges and/or disadvantages at one point in life, and it is easy to feel discouraged and criticize yourself in this process. Although these difficulties can affect you in profound and painful ways, I believe that they are also opportunities to learn about yourself—acknowledge what is not working and find what will work. This journey is quite exhausting for one person, so I aim to become a part of your support system. As a counselor, I hope to empower each individual to make personal choices that will allow them to discover confidence, direction, happiness, peace, and healing. My role as a therapist is to, first and foremost, create a safe space for your stories to be heard and understood. I will listen to your experiences with compassion, warmth, curiosity, hope, respect, and trust. I believe in genuineness and transparency in the therapeutic relationship, so I will communicate directly yet gently. I offer a collaborative and individualized therapeutic process that allows you to accomplish your goals. In other words, my approach to counseling varies based on what is the best fit for each client. I use creative methods to increase self-awareness and self-reflection (e.g. mindfulness, writing, drawing, music, poetry, activities) because I believe each person has a unique medium of expression. Your commitment to change is also monumental in this process because you are the expert on your life. I will be there as a guide to help you uncover your true potential. I hold a Master of Science degree in Counseling from Southern Methodist University. I work with older adolescent and adult individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, interpersonal/relationship issues, OCD, ADHD, grief and loss, trauma/PTSD, LGBTQIA+ related issues, transition and change, anger management, stress management and self-care, social justice issues, and low self-confidence. As an Asian American woman, I celebrate diversity and welcome people from all backgrounds.
