Therapists for college students near 97203
Hi, my name is Greg, and I am a licensed counselor in OR and WA. I have over 15 years of experience providing counseling, and much of that time has been in serving students in universities. I have previously served as the director of the university counseling center at both the University of Portland and Concordia University PDX. I highly enjoy working with college students on a variety of issues. I am a generalist provider that is LGBTQ+ affirming, and utilize an acceptance and commitment therapy perspective to help students with issues such as depression, anxiety, academic stress, life changes, future direction, traumatic experiences, and relationship issues. I look forward to meeting you and helping you in your academic and life journey.
I use integrative approaches to address a variety of counseling needs. My therapy style is interpersonal, relational and emotion-focused. I work towards helping my clients identify what their goals and motivations are, and collaboratively develop specific strategies and interventions that can help them achieve their goals. I have extensive experience working with relational concerns, trauma, self-esteem concerns, identity development and mood disorders. Therapy is an important investment in yourself and can be incredibly rewarding. I encourage my clients to be open, help identify their motivations to create change, and work on identifying steps to take between sessions that will help overcome barriers to emotional well-being. All aspects of you are important and I welcome people from all walks of life. I want to help you improve your relationships, achieve greater satisfaction in your life, and to channel your energy into accomplishing the goals that are important to you. I want to help you develop a stronger sense of self-compassion, greater self-confidence, and to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression and other emotional concerns.
Humor is something I like to incorporate into therapy; however, we can be serious about your concerns too. People of all ages struggle with human suffering and sometimes you need someone to walk with you through that, whether it be something you wish to change or something that you cannot. I aim to help my clients make meaning in life while also identifying the connections between our individual concerns and larger systems in life. I provide individual therapy for a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, identity exploration, and trauma, with specialized experience supporting people through grief, traumatic loss, and substance use concerns. My clients have expressed appreciation for my ability to sit with them in their suffering, when they have felt most alone. I have multiple years of experience previously working in college counseling centers. During these experiences, I supported students from a variety of backgrounds and found a lot of joy in helping students at a unique intersection in their lives. I have been lucky to work with a diverse student population and have supported many queer and trans students in exploring their gender and sexual identities while also addressing other mental health concerns. In addition, I was able to support BIPOC students as they addressed systemic issues within the university, while also exploring their individual racial identities. I further co-facilitated a family-trauma group during my time at a university counseling center. Thus, I find that I greatly appreciate being able to sit with students who are addressing these concerns. I am a Psychologist Resident in OR. I have my doctorate and five years of experience providing therapy, however, to become licensed in OR I must complete a supervised residency. I am supervised by Dr. Carrie McMullin (OR 2963). I am a bilingual therapist that speaks English and Spanish who has experience working with students of diverse backgrounds. You might be a new student or a student that is about to graduate and be the professional you always dreamed of. You might be asking yourself, now what? I will support you no matter where you are in your journey. I have experience supporting and helping first generation students, immigrant students who struggle with adjustment, transitions, depression, anxiety, and history of trauma. For some therapy is scary, and for others it is exciting and wonderful. No matter where you are in your life adventure I am here to support you and create more self awareness where you can be your authentic self.
Welcome. People come to therapy for a range of reasons. For over 13 years I've worked with individuals 18+ years old struggling with mood, self-esteem, anxiety or worry, relationships, identity, loss, trauma, and life transitions. Working in a college counseling center is part of my prior experience. If you are interested in “depth therapy,” or have tried therapy before and the benefits didn’t stick, my approach may appeal to you. My specialty is called psychodynamic psychotherapy. This means you will be invited to begin each session with whatever comes to mind, and together we explore your inner experiences (emotions, sensations, thoughts, beliefs, expectations, dreams) with a focus on seeking to understand you and what’s troubling you. I can help us “read between the lines” for themes or patterns that contribute to feeling stuck, which may have been previously out of awareness, and which can now inform daily life and relieve symptoms. I am also certified to use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a technique that can help heal trauma symptoms impacting current life. While our work centers on you as an individual, none of us exist outside of the broader socioeconomic and cultural systems we are in. These pressures and influences around us are also real and crucial to recognize. Psychotherapy is an opportunity to deal with issues in a way that is difficult to do alone. I can accompany you with my undivided listening, consistent availability, an appointment day and time safeguarded only for you, and commitment to taking you seriously.

Meaningful change happens when we are truly seen and understood. My approach is flexible, non-pathologizing, and interactive. I work from a humanistic, relational perspective, and I aim to create a safe, welcoming space where you are genuinely cared for and respected. I focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship, rooted in empathic understanding and curiosity. I integrate IFS, EMDR, Mindfulness, Somatic Psychology, Psychodynamic therapy, and CBT, tailoring the approach to what feels most supportive for you. I trust your inner wisdom, and my role is to help you reconnect with it as a collaborative partner in your process - compassionately, transparently, and without judgment.
Any of us, from adults to very young children, can experience life challenges that require the caring support of other people. Sometimes we need help to navigate these challenges, and to heal, reorient, and move forward in our lives toward better health and wholeness. When the emotional support of friends and family is not enough, establishing a safe, collaborative relationship with a psychotherapist can be a valuable resource. I enjoy working with students who are ready to access support and guidance in order to address the social-emotional or mental health challenges that are holding them back; the changes and healing they are seeking in their relationships with parents, other family members, friends and/or partners; and clarification of needs, wants and life goals.

I will be learning just as much from you as you are from me since you are the expert in your own life, even in times when it doesn't feel like it. From my former work as an intake coordinator, I know how hard it can feel to reach out for therapy, and I would be happy to see if I can help you meet your goals with a brief initial phone call.
Therapy is a journey of healing, growth, self discovery and so much more. Each person brings with them a different story and unique perspective, which gives us the opportunity to meet you where you are in that moment, with empathy and support. At Steps to Change, LLC we frequently work with people around life transitions, neurodivergence, anxiety, depression, gender and sexuality, acute and chronic trauma issues, self empowerment, parenting, chronic illness (invisible and visible) as well as grief and loss. We enjoy working with individuals in a welcoming space that is created together through the therapeutic relationship. We believe the role of the therapist is to be there as a guide in the process of helping you trust your inner self more and assist in learning new coping strategies to better manage the adversities in life. All services are via Tele-Health, which gives the Client the comfort of their items and space during the sessions, often helping to feel more secure. I provide empathetic, personalized support to college students who are working to adjust to a college environment, managing new and difficult social situations, or working on themselves and discovering their identity now that they are away from home. My approach tends to be more casual and less clinical. I'm excited to help students explore any new and challenging areas they are facing in college.
