Therapists for college students near Durham, NC
Life is hard. You’re tired of unfair social standards and exhausted from your identities not being celebrated, valued, or welcomed. The space you occupy comes with expectations and standards that feel like inescapable constraints. When you pause and look up at the stars you feel a sense of belonging and feel connected to your guiding values yet your day-to-day is missing this feeling. You stay overly busy without time to think about the hard stuff, or you find yourself sad and overwhelmed with less interest in things you may normally care about, and wonder where to go from here. This might be where therapy comes in. Together we can move towards seeing yourself as valuable, living the life you want to live, navigating systems of oppression, and creating community as a way to heal. I specialize in working with adults with marginalized identities. My areas of focus are anxiety, depression, trauma, and identity-related difficulties. During our sessions, we will work within an anti-racist, social justice, Disability Justice, and Health at Every Size framework. If this sounds like a foundation you’d like to work with and you’re looking for the balance between genuine connection, radical compassion, accountability, and a dash of silliness, I might be the therapist for you
Finding Your Way in a Time of So Much Change College and young adulthood can be exciting, but they can also feel surprisingly overwhelming. You may be figuring out who you are apart from your family, navigating friendships or relationships, worrying about your future, managing academic pressure, or simply wondering why everyone else seems to have things figured out when you don’t. Sometimes it’s anxiety that won’t quiet down. Sometimes it’s loneliness, self-doubt, a difficult relationship, family expectations, or the feeling that you should be happier than you are. And sometimes you just need a place where you don’t have to have the right answer. I’ve worked with women and young adults for more than three decades, and I understand that this stage of life is about much more than getting through college. It’s about becoming your own person. Therapy with me is warm, collaborative, and practical. We can make room for what’s difficult while also helping you understand yourself better, trust your own voice, build healthier relationships, and feel more confident about the life you’re creating.
College can bring pressure from every direction—academics, relationships, family expectations, finances, identity, and uncertainty about what comes next. You may be doing everything expected of you while privately feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of yourself. I work well with students who want to understand the patterns shaping their lives, strengthen their boundaries, improve their relationships, and make decisions with greater confidence. I also support students navigating cultural identity, major life transitions, family conflict, burnout, grief, and the challenges of living or studying away from home. My approach is collaborative, culturally responsive, and practical. We will look at your experiences within the context of your relationships, history, culture, responsibilities, and current environment. Sessions provide space to explore what is happening beneath the surface while developing tools you can use in your everyday life. My goal is to help you build greater clarity, self-trust, and a stronger sense of direction.
Anxiety doesn't have to run your life. You can find joy again. On the surface, things are still looking great. You appear to “have it all”, but, on the inside, things are falling apart. You feel stressed, overwhelmed and out of control. It doesn’t have to be like this, and I can show you another way. I help driven people just like you manage their anxiety, stress and irritable bowel syndrome. You can gain stability and finally enjoy your success. If you are ready to do the hard work of changing your life, I’d love to talk to you.
I offer a range of approaches including expressive arts informed therapy, body-centered therapy, and traditional talk therapy. I also specialize in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. Our therapists use empirically-validated and time-tested treatments to help you identify the cause of your pain, heal the underlying issues that are leading to your symptoms and build new skills for healthier habits and patterns.

As a therapist, I offer an empathetic, non-judgmental, supportive, and encouraging space for emerging and young adults to explore area's of life that feel off. I offer virtual therapy to clients located anywhere in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. My approach is exploratory, rather than pre-planned or highly structured. My style is informal and at ease; I offer a space where you can relax enough to become more of who you actually are, rather than feeling like we are analyzing or troubleshooting you. Our focus isn’t determined by what we worked on last time or by a treatment manual – it emerges from what you're wanting, wondering, or feeling each time you arrive. I work best with people willing to continue the work between sessions, by practicing present-focused awareness and trying out gentler, more curious responses to their body sensations, thoughts, and feelings. I offer a collaborative space for you to learn to listen to your pain in a way that fosters healing and insight. Because growth takes courage and vulnerability, our work will also empower you to discover your own strength and set your own pace. Our relationship will be rooted in trust, imagination, and fierce respect for the journey you’re on. My approach is a fusion of many therapeutic styles, including Gestalt therapy, humanistic therapy, feminist therapy, and Buddhist psychology. My name is Kira (she/her) and I am here to help you heal relational wounds. Relationships are foundational to our experience. Connection, intimacy, and feelings of safety are all tied into the relationships formed with ourselves, our communities, and even the natural world. These interactions, or lack thereof, shape our stories and affirm the kind of narratives we tell ourselves about the world around us. You and I’s relationship will act as a conduit for understanding these messages with the intention of cultivating greater connectedness. If relationships are the chapters within our stories, identity is the color and context that fills the pages. Our roles and identities are interwoven together to create the way in which we move through the world. My experience as the eldest child to Caribbean immigrants informed me of this at an early age as I realized not all of my parts of self were allowed expression. I came to understand that the cumulative burdens of family, society, and ancestry not only impacted myself, but everyone around me. The persistent stigma and lack of accessibility for quality mental health care is just one example of these collective burdens. For that reason, my practice is rooted in the belief that decolonizing mental health is essential for fostering genuine healing. I aim to expand traditional frameworks by valuing cultural diversity and understanding the role of historical trauma in shaping individual experiences. Together, we will navigate the impact of these legacies on mental health, promoting an inclusive and holistic therapeutic process. I look forward to connecting with you soon.
I hope to offer a space for both light-hearted and deeply challenging conversations, for big questions and doubts, for insecurities and authentic truths, for vulnerability and new perspectives. A place to be unapologetically human. It's a privilege to walk alongside clients as they really explore their relationships with themselves and others.
In my practice, I see college students and young adults for a variety of issues including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, stress, transitions/major life decisions, and career concerns. I provide individual counseling using solution-focused and cognitive therapies. I also employ a whole-person process approach to career counseling so that all factors are considered when making vocational decisions. I strive to provide my clients with a safe, nonjudgmental environment to understand themselves better and move toward a fulfilling life. I often learn as much from my clients as they do from me and I consider therapy a highly collaborative process.
